"I regret to announce the cancellation of our Boston event. Many factors
that needed to come together to make it happen simply did not. We tried
everything humanly possible and were unable to overcome the
insurmountable obstacles. This is not to say that I don't take the blame
myself, I do. |

So begins the official apology posted
on the JumpCon website on Tuesday 15th July 2008. But what lies
behind those words, laid out in full at the foot of this piece, is a
trail of angry actors and artists from all reaches of the sci-fi
spectrum to - most importantly - angry ripped off fans who will lose
large amounts of their hard-earned cash. |

Ian - "Well,
we can’t say we didn’t see it coming. Like many actors/guests from the UK (e.g. Garrick Hagon, Gerald Home, Dermot Crowley, Colin Baker, Frazer Hines, Sylvester McCoy, Mary Tamm etc), I had a signed contract for Boston and Pittsburgh (with at least five more dates to follow later this year/early next) with a fee, flights, hotels and expenses included. I should have known something was amiss when the first advance payment didn’t arrive four weeks ago. I’d turned down – as had all the other proposed guests from the UK that I know of - other offers of work, conventions, guesting etc to be there. My wife and I had even planned a vacation break between Boston and Pittsburgh at our own expense." |
| "Many fans and friends booked tickets and made flight/travel arrangements to attend the JumpCon events. - And what a ‘Con’ it’s been for them! | ||||
| My heart goes out to all those honest, hardworking fans who spend their hard earned money because they like to enjoy some fun and comradeship at conventions." | ||||
"I have had emails from fans who have paid hundreds of dollars for advance tickets, booked accommodation and paid for flights. It's shameful |
They have been well and truly ‘scalped’ by JumpCon (just as they were by FedCon a few weeks back) and I hope that Shane/the Emperor, or whatever title this disgusting piece of non-creative garbage wants to give himself, pays back every penny to the fans who had put their faith in him. |
He’s done the whole convention circuit a massive disservice with the ineptitude of his shambling attempts to create his so called “new style of convention”. |
Be they fan or guest, he’s rightly caused many people to doubt or trust this sort of venture ever again. |
All the ‘guests’ of my acquaintance are well and truly appalled by this: doubtless the story doesn’t end here." |
| Mark - "It's clear from Ian's message that he is both annoyed and let down by JumpCons organisers, but what is far more prevalent is the concern for the fans who have been prepared to travel large distances to attend the shows." | ||||
| Mark - "Ian sent a further email on Wednesday 16th July to further illustrate his points." | ||||
Ian - "Although we all received signed contracts, we had some doubts from the start with the terms that were offered. We were all invited, originally, to 56 weekend conventions between June 2008 and Autumn 2009 and allowed to pick the ones we wanted. First class flights for self and spouse/partner, a generous fee and per diems and various ‘fringe’ benefits. Mind you, they wanted us to start at 7 a.m. for breakfast with paying fans, same for lunch and evening meal with signings, talks, groups etc in between! Our day would have stretched from 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. for three days! Totally unrealistic. Apart from anything else, guests don’t want to be tired and exhausted when meeting the fans who have paid good money to be there. |
We queried with each other at the time how they could afford this and make it work with at least a dozen guests from the UK alone. Imagine what those air fares would have cost 1st or even Club class! |
Even worse was JumpCon’s total inability to make contact with guests and keep them informed. – Most guests were not aware of the cancelled conventions at Stamford and Kalamazoo until they saw it on the JumpCon website or heard about it from chat rooms etc. Pittsburgh (which I was scheduled to do) was cancelled 24 hours before Boston but I only knew about it from the website. |
It’s worth pointing out that, as I think you know, MOST of the actors/guests take their responsibilities quite seriously, just as they would in their everyday lives as professional working actors. A Convention is no different. |
You will see from many of the other sites how angry people like Robert Picardo, John Billingsley, Vaughn Armstrong, Jason Carter etc to name but a few are with this sort of situation. |
I think you’ll also find that most of the “guests” i.e. actors, are on the side of the fans because the odds are that if the guests are being scammed by an unscrupulous conference organiser, so are the fans. And vice versa ….. and it has to stop." |
| Mark - "Upon looking into the matter further I wound my way to the always excellent Trek Today site, my preferred location for all my Star Trek news. There I found a whole glut of very interesting information." | ||||
| John - "I want to announce that I will not be attending JumpCon in Boston on the weekend of the 18th, 19th, 20th of July. I have asked the promoters to take my name and Bonita's name off their website. If our names remain on their website after the 11th JumpCon is clearly engaging in a form of fraudulent advertising." | ||||
| Mark - "Also angered by the liberal usage of his name was Robert Picardo, of Star Trek Voyager fame." | ||||
| Robert - "To all fans seeking information about my JumpCon status...Contrary to postings elsewhere, I have NOT received 'Half My Fee' from the JumpCon promoter, but only a 10% deposit (6 months ago) as stipulated by our contract. I was due the full balance by July 4th -- ten days ago. Also, contrary to JumpCon's claim, I have NO "scheduling conflict" for JumpCon Boston and have NOT 'cancelled'. JumpCon unilaterally removed me from their website without notifying me that I was cancelled. Why? Perhaps because our contract stipulates that I'm due a 25% cancellation fee if JumpCon cancels me within 60 days of the event." | ||||
| Mark - Despite the huge letdown that this has been for fans, Trek Today did offer this partial piece of good news to the JumpCon attendees." | ||||
| "Vulkon Entertainment, who will be holding a Star Trek convention in Orlando, Florida, on the weekend of July 18-20th, has made a special offer to those holding JumpCon tickets. "While JumpCon was a competing convention to Vulkon this weekend, we do not like to see patrons get hurt when a convention folds. So, for those holding a Boston JumpCon ticket, Vulkon will give you half off either a Bronze reserved seat ticket or half off a general admission ticket. Please bring your JumpCon ticket and ID to the registration table to receive your discount." | ||||
Mark - "And finally to the apology
in full from Shane Senter. Let's hope that something can be salvaged
for the paying public by JumpCon. Read and make up your mind if that will be the case..." |

Announcement to fans coming to JumpCon Boston: |
I regret to
announce the cancellation of our Boston event. Many factors that needed to
come together to make it happen simply did not. We tried everything humanly
possible and were unable to overcome the insurmountable obstacles. This is not to say that I don't take the blame myself, I do. I wanted to see this succeed so badly that I was blinded to some warning signs that should have been obvious. If I have learned anything through this process it's that running a convention business is far more intricate and fraught with peril than it seemed at the outset. I fully apologize to all the fans who've been inconvenienced by this late announcement and assure them that we're in the process of getting you all refunds. I know there are airfare and other considerations for which you will be liable and for that I am truly sorry. I wanted to let you know today rather than keep trying to pull this off and end up like FedCon USA where the fans were already in attendance. Please accept my humble apology, but I'll understand if you can't. To all the consultants and industry experts that were brought in to help; I thank them and hold them blameless as they advised me and tried to do what they could to help. They should not be held accountable for my actions, they should be lauded for what they did try to accomplish based on what they had to work with. To all of the media guests that were to appear at our events; I want to say - I am sorry that this has happened and has put some of you into your own troubles by declining work, saying no to other conventions, and other issues. My intentions were honorable and I expected to be able to salvage things but at this point it seems I cannot.
Sincerely, |
