Quest For Freedom Issue 1 Script by Mark Newbold – March/June 2007
PAGE ONE Description - Panel One We are looking down from very high up to see the Millennium Falcon waiting on a steel landing bay. Running towards it are two figures - Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca, pursued by a gaggle of Stormtroopers, laser fire splashing around them. The sky is fluffy pink, and a pink sheen tinges everything. No dialogue. Narrative – ‘The pink hued world of Anga. Home to all varieties of underworld scum and villainy...This is the planet that Lando Calrissian and Chewbacca have found themselves searching for answers to questions best not asked...And, as they were about to discover, even the best of intentions can have the deadliest of repercussions.’
PAGE TWO
Description - Panel Two Lando and Chewie have reached the landing ramp of the Falcon and are returning fire. Narrative – ‘Laser fire ricocheted off the harsh metallic surface as the two wanted men returned fire with interest...But even a gambler like Calrissian knew when the odds were stacked against him.’
PAGE THREE LANDO - Don't know how we're going to get out of this one. I can't believe the Empire managed to find us out here!" CHEWIE - "Gronk!" Description - Panel Three The Falcon, blasting away from the planet as the city shrinks into the distance, TIE Fighters already in pursuit. In a speech bubble aimed at the Falcon's cockpit. LANDO - We need those co-ordinates and we need them fast! CHEWIE - Roars LANDO - Where to? Where do you think? Who else is gonna help us around here?
PAGE FOUR CUT TO Interior of an Imperial Star Destroyer bridge. It's huge, much larger than a regular one and different in configuration (check out Empire Strikes Back for comparison). The reader doesn't know this but we are aboard the bridge of the Revenger, a new class of Super Star Destroyer built especially to patrol the Setnin Sector. It's a wide shot, but there are two figures dead centre of the panel, Grand Moff Treece and Commander Korne Lans. Narrative – ‘Aboard the Star Destroyer Revenger...’ TREECE - Commander. Description - Panel Four Lans stands to attention next to the Grand Moff, who is staring ahead out of shot towards the massive window and the tiny dot of the Falcon as it approaches. Treece is a large, full-faced man built like a bear with black hair and beady eyes and Lans is wiry thin with a slim moustache. TREECE - Prepare a boarding party for our guests. Description - Panel Five The Falcon banks as it exits the atmosphere still pursued by TIE's and comes across the enormous Star Destroyer. We only see a portion of it (want to save the big reveal for later), but the scale of it is clear. LANDO - What the. Chewie!
PAGE FIVE Description - Panel Six Still dodging and weaving the Falcon dives away from the destroyers guns and into the canyons cut into its superstructure. Like the canyon chases from The Phantom Menace and the trench run from Star Wars, the Falcon leads the TIE's on a hot pursuit, to low and close to ever be hit by turbo lasers on the ships surface, although the gunners still try, hitting their own ships in the process. This will be a very busy panel, you may want to go splash on this one. Narrative – ‘A man like Calrissian often believed in the old adage that hiding in plain site was the safest place to be...but the canyons of the destroyer looked so tempting.’ LANDO - OK, keep us as close to the surface as you can, I'll man the guns.
PAGE SIX Description - Panel Seven Shown as if you are a TIE fighter in his cockpit following the Falcon, bearing right down on the freighter, laser fire pelting out (Imperial laser fire is green, Rebels red). This panel starts top left of the page with the fighter blasting down diagonally to the Falcon, which is in the bottom right corner. The borders of the panel are jagged, like a lightening flash, to give the impression of movement and danger. Narrative – ‘Laser fire rained down upon the Falcon in a fury of energy, but still she evaded...’ Description – Panel Eight This panel shows the helmet of an Imperial TIE pilot in his cockpit and takes up the top right side above the flash panel. OFF CAMERA VOICE - Disable their hyperdrive systems. TIE PILOT - Yes Sir Description - Panel Nine This panel just shows the head and shoulders of Treece and Lans and takes up the bottom left panel, below the flash panel. TREECE - Lord Vader will be most pleased with our prize. Wait, what's he doing!
PAGE SEVEN Description - Panel Ten The Falcon kicks up and away from the surface, almost vertically upwards, still show from the TIE cockpit. Narrative – ‘...And then...’ TIE PILOT - What! Description Panel Eleven The TIE Fighters smash into the wall that the Falcon has just steered away from, causing an enormous explosion. This angle shows the Falcon flying towards the panel, front and on, bathed in the glow from the explosion. LANDO - Yeeahaa! Hit it Chewie, take us to A-desando.
PAGE EIGHT Description - Panel Twelve Bridge of the ISD (Imperial Star Destroyer). Treece is looking angry as the Falcon speeds away and quickly jumps to hyperspace, Lans looks worried. TREECE - Commander, update Lord Vader on the situation. Report back to me in an hour. LANS - Yes Sir. Description – Panel Thirteen We are looking at the Millenium Falcon as she approaches the world of A-desando. It’s a ‘tracking shot’, with the Falcon on the left of the wide panel and the planet on the right. Description – Panel Fourteen A serious looking Lando and Chewbacca sit in the cockpit, facing towards the screen as if we are looking in on them. Narrative – ‘The Setnin Sector world of A-desando. But what surprises would await them there?’ Bottom banner on Page Eight – “COMING NEXT, A-DESANDIAN BLUES!” Quest For Freedom Issue 2 Script by Mark Newbold - August 2007 - Jan 2008
PAGE ONE Description - Panel One Looking down from above see the
Falcon approaching a landing platform on the planet A-desando. We can see a small group of people approach
where the freighter will land. As on the cover of issue 1 the sky is burnt
orange and there is plenty of traffic in the sky. Narrative –
‘The Setnin world of A-desando, a planet with a curious past. Allied to every faction of galactic politics
at one tiome or another, A-desando is now largely neutral just like the rest of
the Setnin Sector. But as Lando and
Chewbacca will soon discover, politics has a habit of intruding on the best
laid plans.’ Description – Panel Two Looking towards the Falcon on her landing bay from over the
shoulder of a 7 foot tall man as he approaches Lando and Chewie. Lando has a broad smile on his face, Chewie as
stoic as ever. LANDO – Jan Lomona.
It’s been too long, how are you?
And how’s being Governor of Ecaps City suit you?
PAGE TWO
Description - Panel Three Side shot of Jan shaking hands
with Lando and Chewie, very similar to issue 1’s cover. Jan looks serious. JAN – It’s suiting me just fine
old pal. What brings you all the way out
to A-desando? And where’s Solo? LANDO – It’s a long story. I’ll
explain everything. Narrative – ‘The three men
quickly left the landing platform, heading for Lomona’s plush office.’
Description – Panel Four Inside Lomona’s office Jan,
Lando and Chewbacca are seated around a table drinking. It’s all very casual and relaxed. At the rear of the room stands a striking red
headed woman and a tall black haired teenager – Jan’s fiancé and daughter. The walls are filled with windows that show
an expansive view of the city.
JAN – So let me get this
straight, Han was captured by Fett and taken to Jabba? And you two are trying to find him before
Fett can deliver him?
Description – Panel Five Head shot of Lando. Have this smaller panel overlap with the
widescreen-type panel four.
LANDO – That’s exactly
right. But the Empire is hot on our
tail, and we needed to go somewhere they wouldn’t think to look for us. A-desando seemed to fit the bill.
PAGE THREE
Description – Panel Six Long, tall panel running down
the left-hand side of the page. Jan stands from his seat looking concerned.
JAN – Now hang on, from what
you’ve told me Solo was thinking exactly the same as you are now. Get somewhere safe where they’ll never find
us. Sure, you and me haven't worked
together for a while but word gets around.
Description – Panel Seven The main panel in the centre of
the page. A broader shot of all
concerned on their feet, looking out through the windows that line the room.
LANDO – Does Setnin have a
significant Imperial presence? JAN – Where doesn’t? I think you guys had better refuel and
scratch gravel before they trace you here.
Description - Panel Eight Another page length panel, this
time with both Lando and Chewie looking back across the page.
LANDO – You’re absolutely
right, I shouldn’t have come here. It
was foolish of me.
Description- Panel Nine Another small bottom corner
panel, this time of Jan, with Frans his fiancé and Paige his daughter in the
background.
JAN – Lando, we’re friends and
always will be, but I have more to protect these days than just my reputation. Listen, stay the night, prep the Falcon and
get on your way tomorrow.
PAGE FOUR
CUT TO Description – Panel Ten Interior of an Imperial Star
Destroyer bridge. Treece and Lans are
standing to attention as they listen to the words of a hologram, that of their
master Lord Darth Vader. We can only see
the cloak of the hologram, so as not to spoil the initial effect.
Narrative – ‘Meanwhile, aboard
the Star Destroyer Revenger...’
TREECE – My Lord, if you’ll
allow me to explain... Description - Panel Eleven A full length splash page of
the Vader hologram, with Treece and Lans standing to attention before it. The speech bubbles work their way down the
page. VADER – I have had more than
enough of your explanations Moff Treece.
It’s time you started to bring me results. TREECE – But my Lord, I assure
you, Calrissian and the wookie are on A-desando. The gambler has ties with a governor
there. I have already prepared a battle
group to invade the city. VADER – You overstep your
authority Treece. Proceed, but if
Calrissian and the wookie are not there...” Narrative – Vader leaves the
words hanging in the air like an unspoken death threat and Treece feels his
throat close up.” TREECE – As you wish my Lord. Description - Panel Twelve Treece turns to Lans as the
hologram flickers out of existence, a look of consternation on his face. TREECE – Prepare the landing party. And the BUG fighters.
PAGE FIVE Description - Panel Thirteen A small panel as alarms begin
to blare across the city of Ecaps. Narrative – The next day. The bustle and rush of the city was stopped
dead by the dreaded siren alarms that rang out, alerting the populace to the
imminent danger that came from above. Description – Panel Fourteen Back in the plush office Jan
grabs a comlink off the wall and shouts down it. JAN – Dap, please tell me this
is a false alarm. Description – Panel Fifteen Another small panel of a man
shouting into another comlink. This is
Dap Teks, Jans first minister. DAP – No can do Jan, this one’s
for real. Imperial Star Destroyer in
orbit, and there’s trouble on the way down. Description – Panel Sixteen A wide shot of the city
skyline, and above in the blue skies can be seen Imperial drop ships, TIE
fighters and unfamiliar new vessels – BUG Fighters. |
