What Lies Within

1987 story by Mark Newbold and Jonathan Hicks

Four years after Episode IV - A New Hope

On Chancai, a furious Goah Galletti informs Jan Lomona that Commander Terrov has murdered Mactin Selka and they both swear revenge. Meanwhile, two archaeologists, Dr’s Joneligg and Meenton, approach Lomona and ask for transport to the planet Escall. After much discussion and haggling Jan agrees to take them. Jan is suspicious of the men - something about them makes him uneasy, but Goah wants to get the job done as quickly as possible so he can get after Terrov. Setting out for Escall there’s an air of doom about the Berone Sunrise. Upon arrival at Escall the archaeologists leave the Berone Sunrise, heading out into the forest saying that they will return in a few short hours. They don’t return. Jan and Goah head after them and stumble upon a massive Imperial facility built around the base of an enormous mountain. Hiding in the foliage Galletti pulls out his snipers rifle and looks through the sights. He sees the two archaeologists talking to two Imperial Commanders - Commander Terrov and Commander Ooamlek. Goah is able to clearly lip-read the two archaeologists making it clear that Jan and Goah must be eliminated. Jan decides to enter the mountain facility and see what’s really going on. Galletti agrees and sets himself up to provide cover. Twenty minutes later Lomona returns, saying that there are tonnes of Janos Jewel secured in the cave, and that he can the sub-frames of starships being constructed. Eager to learn more they both enter the base but are spotted, outnumbered and captured after a brief gunfight. Taken to the prison quarters they are questioned and then led to another room. Manacled to their seats, Galletti almost explodes when Terrov enters the room and gloats at Galletti about the murder of his wife Tref Goodman and of Mactin Selka. Terrov explains that the two archaeologists had been brought to Escall to check the strength of the Janos Jewel, some of which is indigenous to Escall and some imported from Janos itself, and make recommendations for its safe storage. Galletti can barely contain his fury. The two of them are then thrown into a dark cell. Lomona tries to calm Goah down but it’s no use - he’s determined to exact revenge on Terrov, no matter the price. Jan checks through the bars of their cage and finds their friend and colleague Latti Tellex secured in another cage down the hallway. Latti had arrived on the world sometime before and had also been intrigued by the mountain base. After a similar scout around the base he too had been captured. The three of them concoct an elaborate escape plan to break out. Latti feigns illness and screams out in agony, bringing three Stormtroopers into the cell area. Reaching out with his limited force abilities, Lomona makes one of the guards stumble backwards towards the cage, allowing Galletti to snag his Blaster and shoot the other two guards. Aiming the rifle at the Troopers head, he threatens to blow him away unless he releases the cage, which he quickly does. Lomona frees Latti and Galletti shoots the Trooper. They flee the cell bay and fight their way towards Terrov’s quarters, blasting dozens of Stormtroopers in the process. After making their way right through the complex to the living quarters beneath ground Galletti runs ahead and locates Terrov in his quarters. Chasing him down into the cavern, with Latti alongside, he stalks Terrov while Lomona covers the entrance and blasts more Troopers. Finally, Galletti corners Terrov, but not before Terrov unleashes a barrage of Blaster fire which brings down a rain of rocks and boulders onto Latti. Latti dies swiftly and enraged Galletti turns on Terrov and executes him, revenge for the deaths of Mactin Selka and Latti Tellex. Jan catches up and points out that they are deep within the cave system, cornered by squads of Stormtroopers. Angered by his friends tunnel-vision, Lomona fights his way out yelling at Galletti to snap out of it and fight. The two continue to argue as they make their way back to the Sunrise, saying things that really shouldn’t be said - and all the time the powerful Janos Jewel absorbs the energy from their Blaster fire and is building up to a detonation point. Alarms begin to blare - Escall is on planetary alert. A mass exodus begins, with every man, woman and child for themselves. Jan points towards the jungle and the Sunrise but Galletti is so angered by their argument and the home truths within that he refuses to share a ship with Jan and runs to steal a shuttle. Lomona tries to stop him but Galletti turns on him, rifle at the ready and warns him not to come any closer. Jan nods and backs away as Goah breaks into the shuttle. Independently the two men blast off and escape Escall as the planet breaks apart from the enormous pressure of the Janos Jewel build up and explodes.

What Lies Within

1987 story by Mark Newbold and Jonathan Hicks

Four years after Episode IV - A New Hope

Histories - Recorded on 12th and 14th August 1986, partly in Mark Newbold’s garage, this is the story in which the popular sidekick Latti Tellex was killed. What Lies Within was set just after the events of Episode VI - Return of the Jedi and Trouble on Tantum V, and saw the temporary end of the Lomona/Galletti friendship. What Lies Within saw the death of Commander Terrov, Galletti’s main nemesis over the past decade and also saw the first use of Lomona’s force abilities since his imprisonment with Galletti on Luronsa IV in The Tatooine Effect one year before. Also, Galletti’s actions of revenge upon Terrov resulted in the destruction of the planet Escall, an event that would alter the powerbase of the Empire within the Setnin Sector.
